📘 Explanation and rules
 

In Dutch, every noun (a person, thing, or place) has an article in front of it.
There are three articles in Dutch: 👉 de, het, and een.
They work like “the” and “a/an” in English.

🔹 1. Definite articles: de and het

De and het both mean “the” in English.
You use them when talking about something specific, something the other person already knows.

de
used with most words — especially people, professions, and plural nouns
de man (the man), de tafel (the table), de boeken (the books)

het
used with a smaller group — often things, materials, languages, and diminutives
het huis (the house), het kind (the child), het water (the water), het boek (the book)

⚠️ There is no easy rule to always know whether to use de or het.
You must learn it word by word.
However, about 75% of nouns use “de.”

🔹 2. Indefinite article: een

Een means “a” or “an” in English.
You use een when talking about something general or not specific.

Ik heb een boek.
I have a book.

Zij heeft een hond.
She has a dog.

✅ Note: Een has no plural form.
You say de boeken — not een boeken.

🔹 3. Plural (more than one thing)

Words in the plural always use de.

de man → de mannen
the man → the men

het huis → de huizen
the house → the houses

There is no plural form of een.

• Het boek ligt op de tafel.

  A child sleeps in bed.

• De hond is oud.
  The dog is old.

• Het water is koud.
  The water is cold.
