A1: Describing people

In this lesson, you learn to describe your own appearance (je eigen uiterlijk). You also learn to describe the appearance of someone else (het uiterlijk van een ander).

You describe a person with short sentences (korte zinnen). You often start with the hair, then you talk about the eyes. You can also say something about the height or the body.

Appearance (Uiterlijk) 

When describing someone, you usually follow this order:

1. Hair (Haar) 

First, you look at the hair (het haar). You say how long the hair is and what color it has.

Hij heeft kort haar. (He has short hair.) 

Zij heeft lang haar. (She has long hair.) 

Hij heeft blond haar. (He has blond hair.) 

Zij heeft bruin haar. (She has brown hair.)

2. Eyes (Ogen) 

Next, you look at the eyes. You say the color of the eyes.

Zij heeft blauwe ogen. (She has blue eyes.) 

Hij heeft bruine ogen. (He has brown eyes.)

3. Height and Body (Lengte en Lichaam) 

You also look at the height (de lengte) of a person.

Hij is lang. (He is tall.) Zij is kort. (She is short.)

Sometimes you say something about the body (het lichaam).

Hij is sterk. (He is strong.) 

Zij is dun. (She is thin.)

Examples (Voorbeelden) 

Here are sentences you can use to describe someone simply. Note that for hair and eyes we use the verb hebben (to have), but for height and body type we use zijn (to be).

Zij heeft lang bruin haar. (She has long brown hair.) 

Hij heeft kort blond haar. (He has short blond hair.) 

Zij heeft groene ogen. (She has green eyes.) 

Hij is lang. (He is tall.) 

Zij is klein en zij heeft blauwe ogen. (She is small and she has blue eyes.) 

Hij heeft zwart haar en hij is sterk. (He has black hair and he is strong.)
