My family

In this lesson, you talk about your family (Je praat over je familie). 

You learn to say who is in your family (Je zegt wie in je familie is).

Family Members (Familieleden) 

Here are the words for family members:

De vader (the father) = de papa (the dad) 

De moeder (the mother) = de mama (the mom) 

De ouders (the parents) = de vader en de moeder (the father and the mother)

De broer (the brother) = een man in je familie, een zoon van je ouders (a man in your family, a son of your parents) 

De zus (the sister) = een vrouw in je familie, een dochter van je ouders (a woman in your family, a daughter of your parents)

De zoon (the son) = een jongen van jou (a boy of yours) 

De dochter (the daughter) = een meisje van jou (a girl of yours)

De opa (the grandpa) = de vader van je vader of moeder (the father of your father or mother) 

De oma (the grandma) = de moeder van je vader of moeder (the mother of your father or mother) 

De grootouders (the grandparents) = de oma en opa (the grandma and grandpa)

De oom (the uncle) = de broer van je vader of moeder (the brother of your father or mother) 

De tante (the aunt) = de zus van je vader of moeder (the sister of your father or mother)

De neef (the male cousin / nephew) = de zoon van je oom of tante (the son of your uncle or aunt) 

De nicht (the female cousin / niece) = de dochter van je oom of tante (the daughter of your uncle or aunt)

Here are common sentences to describe your family structure:

Ik heb een grote familie. (I have a big family.) 

Ik heb een kleine familie. (I have a small family.)

Ik heb een broer. (I have a brother.) 

Ik heb een zus. (I have a sister.) 

Ik heb een moeder. (I have a mother.) 

Ik heb een vader. (I have a father.) 

Ik heb een opa en een oma. (I have a grandpa and a grandma.)

Ik ben Chris. Ik heb één broer. (I am Chris. I have one brother.) Ik woon met mijn ouders. (I live with my parents.) 

Ik bezoek mijn oma. (I visit my grandma.)

Use these questions to ask someone about their family:

Wie is jouw vader? (Who is your father?) 

Wie is jouw moeder? (Who is your mother?) 

Heb jij broers? (Do you have brothers?)
